Before and After - Maura Fox

Often I begin a session painting small abstracts with brushed molten encaustic paint and the fusing torch on small birch boards to transition to my creative zone.  The small board abstract painting results in surprising effects which I integrate in my work.

I sketch my ideas with simple shapes on larger, birch panels over a foundation of encaustic medium.  Initially, my focus is where the light is coming from in the scene, and I sketch the darkest shadows first to lay down the ‘bones’ of the painting. I paint with brushes on birch panels using molten encaustic paint, and use a torch as a brush, and to fuse the wax layers.  The torch can build textures, patterns, depth, luminosity, and hue that a bristled brush can’t accomplish with hot wax paint.    This process creates a delightful painting ‘blend’ for creating contrasting hues, translucence, luminosity, reflections of light values, and movement in my scenes.

Many of my paintings require a lengthy work process from start to completion. The finished work is always different from the initial sketches.  Brush painting and fusing molten wax paint takes me on a journey to a new way of depicting moments of visual, emotional, impressions of the world that we all share and embrace.  The hot wax painting process is completely absorbing, and I become happily oblivious to the passage of time!!

The "Before" seen below is an abstract technique, 5"x 7".

The "After" is seen below in two pieces, "Ventana Creek" 18"x 24", and "Beach Walk", 24" x 36”. Techniques from the small abstract are expanded and visible in these "After" paintings.
