An underpainting is one of my favorite techniques for adding color harmony to a pastel piece.  In this sequence for a Big Sur commission, I've started with a family of pinks to block in the basic shapes.  I apply the pastel and then wash it in with acetone.  As I progress through the painting process, I apply the soft, dry pastels but still allow the underpainting to show through.  By the end of the painting, the pink underpainting subtly adds a glow to the entire piece.
