My Favorite Tool - Janice Pluma

As a mixed media artist, I enjoy the process of transforming the materials I use into something unexpected. Lately, my favorite tool for accomplishing this is a heat gun, typically used for paint stripping. I use it to melt various synthetics to be included in collage. It’s a little dangerous and a bit tricky to control, which, for me, adds to the excitement…I can never be sure of what will result. My new series, Geology, includes melted Tyvek, a polyester material used for home insulation, disposable garments and mailing envelopes. In this case I cut various shapes out of a disposable cover-up, then painted both sides with acrylic paint. When the heat is applied, the material shrinks and distorts, resulting in beautiful elements that are then adhered to canvas. I can paint around and over the melted pieces to create a dimensional surface of thick, interesting textures.

I’m looking forward to sharing this new series plus others with Open Studios visitors. Please stop by Atelier 708 (catalog #192) in Paso Robles. I’ll be there both weekends. You can also see my work at www.janicepluma.com or on Facebook at Janice Pluma Contemporary Art.
