What Inspires Me - Patricia Newton

The first thing that inspires me is a good cup of coffee in the morning!  By the way, my husband makes a great cup of coffee.  Travis, is my right hand man!

Often times I have to look for inspiration simply by hanging out with fellow artists.  I love the energy.   Walking through the galleries to see other artists work always makes me ready to mix paint.  Music, is a huge inspiration!  While romantic music inspires soft, colorful sunsets, a playlist of more dramatic music or dance music, will inspire a crashing wave, licking up the edge of rocks.  When inspiration wanes a bit, a second cup of coffee, favorite music and just mixing paint helps.  To break the spell of a block, (Inability to create), usually after taking a short break from painting, I begin by dipping my brush into paint, letting it take me on a journey.  Sometimes the journey doesn’t always lead to a fabulous work of art, however, it breaks the spell.  Within a day or two I’m back to work, happily creating.

Although my first love of art is a seascape painted with oil, I love to paint lot’s of different subject matter.  Human and animal portraits are probably my second love.  I’ve painted portraits from 11x14 to 30x40.   I think a great portrait is one where the subject is in their own element, nothing stiff or created.

More information about portraits or other subjects, can be found on my website: www.artbypatricia.com.

Hope to see you at my Open Studio #191!
