My Favorite Tool - Mae Wilson

My Favorite Tool is…The Prompt Box

For me, a huge part of the creative process is chasing down the subjects for my prints. My favorite words? How, what if, and why? I've found that idea wrangling is a little like big game hunting and a little like looking for Easter eggs. It makes life an eternal search, propels me out on adventures I might otherwise avoid, and generally reminds me that the world is a gift box, filled with fascinating and wonderful things.

In my quest to find the weirdest and most interesting things to record in my prints, I've massed a reasonably large collection of supplementary materials: half-baked ideas from old sketchbooks, coffee table books filled with art I admire,  stories from history and science I can pull apart and an online texture library. But by far the most useful brain food is my prompt box.  Here, I’ve recorded questions and directives for making different kinds of pieces, stimulating the brain, allowing plenty of room for play and experimentation.  The images below are a couple ideas to share.

Mae will be showing both weekends of the Tour in San Luis Obispo, studio number 109. Stop by and learn about how she creates!  You can also see more of her work by visiting: maewilsonstudios.com.
