MARGARET BERTRAND

I LOVE TO TRY NEW THINGS - MAKES MY CREATIVE JUICES GET GOING!So when I had an opportunity to see an Exhibition in Vallejo, Ca at the Jen Tough Gallery with work by Jerry McLaughlin, Lisa Pressman and others who work in Cold Wax I jumped at the chance!  My usual medium is encaustic -- bees wax which you work with heat--but COLD wax doesn't use heat;  in fact, you can't heat it. When I got back to the studio I couldn't wait to try it out.  The darks, really suck up the light -- making any color you use POP!  It was fun.  I still love encaustic because it gives you that gloss, like glass -- if that's what I want!  And I often do! Some people mistake it for glass tile... it's fun to fool my viewers.  But it is bees wax.  My work is usually abstract,  I've done a lot of abstract waterfall paintings in wax -- over 150 of them. Some have paper collaged in, others are on copper, or with copper, or with clear drafting film.  I use different materials to capture the feel of the water and its luminosity. Others capture the abstract imagry of the central coast's fog.  You just never know what I'll try next.  Stop my my studio and see.  Open both weekends, along with my husband, artist Robert Dodge.  We teach encaustic painting classes and encaustic monotype classes so you can sign up for those too.I hope to see you!
