One of my favorite techniques with pastels is to use an under painting.  This sequence of photos from a commission for a Big Sur painting shows how a family of pink and raspberry colors were used for an under painting.  I applied soft pastels in blocks of colors and then washed the pastel into the paper using acetone.  As I developed the rest of the painting, I applied pastel lightly so that the under painting colors showed through.  The end result is more color harmony and a subtle pink and raspberry colored glow to the painting.
